Following the always useful theory of “buy low, sell high” I’ve employed a very easy, non time consuming method to earn a few extra credits while leveling characters through Star Wars: The Old Republic. The process is simple and involves two types of goods regularly found on the GTN:
- Epic Item Modifications
- Moddable Gear (Orange Gear)
I wrote a post about How to Improve the SWTOR GTN and within that post I talked a little bit about the predetermined sale price that is automatically listed when attempting to sell products. The price is related to a MSRP (manufacturer’s suggested retail price) in that it sets the standard for pricing of items in the game. The biggest problem with this system is that it creates a price bottom line that may not be in tune with the actual value of the products being listed and opens the market up for mass undercutting of popular goods. But, there is an upside to the MSRP, and this post only touches the tip of the iceberg about how to capitalize on that upside.
The short of it is: while mass market, high quantity goods such as crafting materials will likely be undercut constantly because of the MSRP, low volume but high quality (value) goods such as epic and moddable gear will also be undercut. The difference is that the high volume items will be undercut so frequently that it’ll be a chore to try and regulate certain goods (through buying and reselling) while the undercutting on rare items will be less frequent allowing a player to buy and resell those items for a hefty profit.
For example, a level 41 orange (moddable) heavy armor chest piece may normally sell on the GTN for around 15,000 credits. The MSRP given for the item when first moved into the sale window may only be 4850 credits. Many players won’t take the time to research the price of the item before listing it and will list it at the MSRP of 4850. A quick search of the GTN by a player looking to capitalize on the mistakes of other, less involved auctioneers, would return a 10k plus profit if resold at the actual value price of the item (15k). The process is that simple. It takes very little time, so it doesn’t detract from leveling and while it rewards a player who diligently monitors the GTN, it can be utilized by any player stopping by a GTN kiosk.
Now that I’ve described the method, let me move on to the two best selling items I’ve found so far.
1 – Epic Item Modifications
Any purple quality items in the item modifications group (mods, hilt, barrel, augment, etc) can be profitable depending on their listed price. Though, some items do sell better or worse than others. I’ve found that augments generally sell at a high price, but they may not sell quickly, especially if they have stats for tanks. DPS stats are always better sellers while people are leveling since most people level DPS spec, but even those augments can be slow movers. If you aren’t going to watch the market closely to see what is and isn’t selling well, I’d avoid augment sales altogether.
The mod slot, on the other hand, is fast moving and probably the best seller. To boot, it sells very high. Just today I purchased an epic nimble mod (for Trooper class) for 5000 credits and resold it in less than 3 hours for 18300 credits. The profit potential for mods is super high. The downside, if any, is that people seem to upgrade their mod slot in gear more than others – possibly due to the stat benefit being higher than other mods – so deals can be missed as others scoop them up.
2 – Moddable (Orange) Gear
I don’t find cheap orange gear on the GTN as often as I find epic item mods, but when I do I almost always turn a large profit. Players want moddable, customizable gear so they can try to look how they want without sacrificing stats (also the reason mods sell so well). Since orange gear is the rarest to find on the GTN, it generally sells high and sells fast. The sale rate makes finding deals without sitting at the kiosk all day a bit tougher than with item mods, but every now and then a player will do exactly what I described in the armor example above. The MSRP, in many cases, is going to be many thousand credits below the actual value of the item and snatching up that deal can make a player 10, 20, 30 or even 40 thousand credits in the short time it took to look for the deal, buy it and relist it.
Other Credit Potential
I’m sure crafting materials still have plenty of earning potential, but I haven’t been crafting much as I’ve been leveling and didn’t really want to spend my time crafting when I’d rather be working on my SWTOR Leveling Experiment. Eventually I’ll sit down and really analyze the market, but for a quick buck at low risk and low time investment, you can’t beat this method.
Have any other SWTOR GTN credit making tips? Can’t seem to afford anything in game and need help managing your credits? Leave me a comment and let me know. Thanks for reading!

what you are saying is VERY true, just the other day i found a series of 5 or 6 orange items on the GTN for only 2K a piece, so i bought them then turned around and sold them all back for about 100-150K a piece. good post keep it up
Hey Aneddu,
I’m glad you found the information useful. I haven’t been lucky enough to turn a 2k purchase into a 100-150k profit, but I have made 15-20k on many items. 100k+ turnover on a single item is fantastic, keep it up! And thanks for commenting.
Bought some orange light armor consular bracers the other day for 4k on GTN, put them back up for sale for 250k and sold within 24 hrs, I’ve since got 3 more pairs of orange jedi knight bracers which i’m selling for 200k a pop!
Hey Eastiano, I recently came across some orange bracers for 8k on the GTN and sold them for 225k. Orange (moddable) bracers and belts are very rare, but they are also are the best gear for their slot when modded right, so they sold at a premium. Finding 4 pair of them at a low price on the GTN is fantastic luck.
Patch 1.2 just released today and with it comes legacy vendors that sell legacy gear. Moddable belts and bracers will both be included in that gear, so the days of making 200k+ off them on the GTN are going to be a thing of the past, sadly.
Yeah, you’re right, couldn’t sell my last 3 sets, so I offered them to some fellow guildies.
Got sum nice stuff in return for my generosity though, including a custom built lightsaber with red crystal for my jedi sage!
Levelling up nicely in biochem now and just crafted my first implants so hopefully I can make my creds this way on GTN.
